National Tequila Day is celebrated on July 24 and there are plenty of restaurants around Rhode Island where you can sip tequila-inspired concoctions.

If you didn’t know, July 24 is National Tequila Day. In honor of Tequila Day being right around the corner, let’s talk about some of the best places to get tequila in Rhode Island. But first, here are some fun facts about the popular spirit.

Tequila is a distilled spirit made from the blue agave plant  These plants take between eight and twelve years to grow. Most tequila is made in Jalisco, Mexico. Tequila can be categorized into three different categories; Blanco, Reposado and Anejo. Last but not least…the worm. The worm was created as a marketing ploy that was used in the 1940s. Brands claimed that the worm had magical qualities.

Now, let’s get into some places you can go to celebrate National Tequila Day


  1. Dolores

Dolores is located on the East Side of Providence. The Mexican restaurant serves classic Mexican cuisine and lots of creative cocktails. If you want to sample spirits, they have a mezcal flight for $25 which includes Nuestra Soledad, Origen Raiz and Siembra Metl. They also have a Tequila a Blanco flight which has Siembra Azul, Pasote and Siembra Valles ‘Ancestral’ for $22. Lastly, they pour a Tequila Añejo flight, which has Pasote, Ocho 2016 and Siembra Valles for $33.


2. Don Jose Tequilas

Located on Federal Hill in Providence, Don Jose Tequilas serves a variety of Mexican dishes. The restaurant has an extensive tequila bar where you can sip a tequila flight, try one of their signature margaritas or one of the many mezcal varieties.


3. Durk’s Bar-B-Q

Are you in the mood for ribs, pulled pork or a burger? Maybe you’re craving some mac and cheese or a corndog. All of these dishes can be found at Durk’s Bar-B-Q in Providence. Plus, the drink menu is long one. The restaurant has tons of tequila for your Tequila Day festivities like Casamigos, Chinacho Blanco, Chinaco Reposado, Espolon Reposado and more. If you are more of a margarita person, don’t worry, because they have those too.


4. Diego’s

Head on over to Newport or the East Side of Providence and dive into all of the Mexican dishes Diego’s has to offer. For drinks, there are many tequila creations to taste. They also stock unique brands like Bride of Carlos, Silver Fox, Roman Holiday, Sandia Fresca and Spicy Palomy. It doesn’t stop there, because they also have tequila flights. They have First Class for $28 and Ultra for $38.


5. Perro Salado

Perro Salado can be found on Charles Street in Newport. This restaurant has two different kinds of tequila flights. They have vertical tequila flights, which consist of a silver, reposado and anejo from the same producer. They also have horizontal tequila flights which are three of the same grade from different producers. For each of these flights, they have lots of different options. Margaritas and other tequila drinks are available in flavors like Spicy Cucumber, Blood Orange and Passion Fruit.
