12 Wicked Fun Things to Do at the Newport Winter Festival
The ten-day Newport Winter Festival involves everything from ice bars and kids activities to a chili cook-off.
Newport Winter Festival kicks off this Friday, February 14, and will last for ten days. Purchase a festival bracelet in advance for discounts on some of the featured events.
1. Polar Pineapples
Kick off the Newport Winter Festival by sliding on into Gurney’s newly updated ice bar. Grab a cocktail and stay warm around one of their eleven fire pits and take in the stunning views of beautiful Narragansett Bay. If you purchase a bracelet, you can get a free hot cider.
2. The Eagles Experience
Are you an Eagles fan? Miss hearing classics like “Best of My Love” and “Take it Easy”? The Marriott hotel presents an Eagles tribute event live on Friday February 15 at 8:30 p.m. listen to the Eagles Experience as they bring you back to the ‘70s with hits such as, “Hotel California,” “The Long Run” and “Heartache Tonight”. Tickets cost $20 in advance and are $15 with a bracelet.
3. Illusionist David Garrity
The weekend fun continues on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. with Illusionist David Garrity. Watch as he reads your mind, floats a table around the stage and performs dangerous stunts. With music, humor and audience participation, join David Garrity as he takes you and the whole audience on a wild ride that will have you laughing, amazed and even worried as he attempts to pull off a Houdini-style escape challenge. Tickets cost $8 with a bracelet and $10 at the door.
4. Twenty-Fifth Annual Chili Cook-Off
Spice up your life and head to Gurney’s as area restaurants and caterers heat things up in a chili competition. Bring your appetite and taste different chilis while battling it out with your family on which chili tastes the best. Plus, sip Sam Adams specials. If you think you have the best chili call 401-847-7666 to enter. Tickets are $12 but you can save $2 with a bracelet. Children are $5 or $3 with bracelet and children four and under are free.
5. Rainforest Reptile Show
Bring out the snakes. Both adults and kiddos alike can learn about reptiles behaviors as well as their natural habitats. Some animals you can expect to see are, alligators, snakes, turtles and lizards. Admission is $6. Guests with a bracelet can save fifty percent.
6. Juggler and Comedian Robert Clarke
Magician and Juggler will entertain you and your children and leave you wishing for more. Watch as he mystifies your whole family with magic, juggling and a comedy routine with audience participation. Tickets are $7 and $3 with a bracelet. 7. Princess Party
Elsa and Anna travel from Arendelle to Oceancliff Castle to party with you and your family. Enjoy stories, songs, food and surprises all fit for a princess. 8. Teddy Bear Tea
Grab your favorite teddy bear and head over to the Newport Harbor Hotel. Musical storyteller, Christopher Carbone, will share stories and songs of the wonders of winter. Adults can sip tea while the children enjoy milk and cookies. Tickets are $5. Enjoy a free tea-time activity with the use of a bracelet.
On Friday February 21, watch Casey Carle juggles bubbles at the Newport Marriott. With plenty of quick wit, comedy, music and bubbles, the whole family will be entertained as they watch Bubblemania push the boundaries of what a bubble is capable of. Tickets will be available at the door for $9 and $5 with your Newport festival bracelet.
10. Third Annual Mac and Cheese Showdown
If you’re a mac and cheese lover, this is the event for you. Join the Newport Marriott as they host the third annual cheesy mac and cheese smackdown. Restaurants in the area will compete to see who has the best mac and cheese during two time slots from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m. Tickets cost $18 in advance or with a bracelet, and $22 at the door if available. 11. Beach Polo
Head to the shoreline and see horses and players put on a polo match on the beach. This event is free and food will be available from Amano Pizza and Gelato and Blount Fine Foods Food trucks. The matches will be held on February 22 and 23. You can visit Newport Polo’s website for more information.
12. Mad Science Show
