Chomp Kitchen and Drinks’ Sam Glynn is slowly building a restaurant empire. Well kinda. The restaurant started as one tiny location in Warren, then expanded to Providence, then moved to a new larger spot in Warren, and this spring, they’ll open a third location on Broadway in Newport. Chomp is taking over the former beloved Fifth Element space that has been a landmark for Newporters for more than twenty years.
While the former Fifth Element restaurant will transform into a creative burger and craft beer hall, they will retain some of the things the local community loved about it. They plan to continue with the tradition of live music and bring back local performers on special nights and weekends, and embrace the expansive patio.
Expanding to Newport has been on Glynn’s mind for a while. “We looked down the traditional avenues of online listings in Newport, but this location came about through friends of friends,” he says. “It checked off all the boxes we were looking for. The location is fantastic. We love the Broadway neighborhood.”
He compares the residential neighborhood that surrounds Newport’s Broadway to that of Ives Street in Providence and Water Street in Warren, where the two other Chomps are located. “It offers something on Broadway that isn’t currently offered. There are so many restaurants on the street and they all do something a little different,” Glynn says. “We thought it would be very complementary to the neighborhood and it just fell into position and happened really quick.”
They have already started painting the outside of the building and doing demolition on the interior. Glynn says they plan to open up the space more like in Warren to create a community beer hall vibe. The bar will expand from fourteen to twenty feet long, and they will host live jazz once they get going. “We still want to keep the things that are bringing people to that area and continue to support the musicians, but expand our brand as well,” Glynn says. Longtime chefs Tanner Larkin and Niki Holden (now chief operations director) will help train the new staff. Interested people can apply for positions online.
The hope is to be open this spring, by St. Patrick’s Day, which is a very popular time in Newport when people come from near and far for the parade. So far, the Newport restaurant project is less stressful than the other locations, because the space was already conducive to their plans.
“It’s already a restaurant, so a lot of the heavy lifting has been done with zoning and permitting and all those things,” Glynn says. “It’s a little easier for us and welcomed by everyone on our team.”
Expect lots of fun video reels on Instagram and other social media showcasing Chomp Kitchen and Drinks and its food. They’ve also hired their first in-house marketing manager to create content, which means they’re putting even more effort into video production. Here are some of our favorite reels here.

Will our favorite local burger joint go viral for its future content?
“We are thinking about how we see the future of content going, and having really rich video is something we wanted to do,” Glynn says. “We are going to do an interview about our ketchup, because everyone either loves it or hates it.”
Well, Sam, we’ve seen you market the Chomp Sauce as a food product (and not the ketchup), so that says something. Just kidding. We love your ketchup. 😂
