Brewed Awakenings Replacing Nicks on Westminster

Nicks on Westminster is closed for good after less than a year in business, and a coffee shop is now open in its place.

Nicks on Westminster in downtown Providence is closed for good after less than a year of operating, and Brewed Awakenings Bistro and Cafe is opening today in its place. This is the coffee shop chain’s sixth location, in addition to two in Johnston (Cherry Hill and Atwood Avenue), one in Cranston, one in Warwick and one in Wakefield.

The building at 100 Westminster Street building has installed a thermal imaging system that allows temperature checks for both employees and guests through a quick and noninvasive scan. Anyone with an elevated temperature is not allowed onsite. Owner David Levesque is thrilled to add a downtown Providence location to his list of businesses. “There is no better place than Westminster Street,” says Levesque. “It was a great opportunity that we simply couldn’t pass up. Adding a downtown location was the ideal spot for us to add to our portfolio of stores.”

Owner of Nicks on Broadway and former co-owner of Nicks on Westminster, Derek Wagner, voiced his sadness at closing the downcity location last week on Twitter at @nicksonbroadway. “It is so very sad. @nicksonwest broke my heart & almost my will. Almost. But I will continue to fight for our lives each day to keep @nicksonbroadway alive,” he wrote.

In another tweet, he wrote: “One of the hardest parts is that without proper support, I fear this fate for many restaurants, farms, small businesses & musicians.”

With the closure of one business, comes the opening of another. The Brewed Awakenings Providence menu will feature a full bar and current menu items, as well as new options. There will be a piano in the lobby all this week to kick off the grand opening, courtesy of Joseph Paolino, Jr. All locations offer catering services, online ordering and Cherry Hill and Warwick have drive-throughs as well.

Brewed Awakenings has more than fifty job openings available to start immediately for both front and back of house positions, including managers, bartenders, baristas, shift supervisors, cashiers, food prep and kitchen staff. Anyone
