Your eyes can’t help but dart across the colorful, expansive board topped with cubed and sliced cheese, cheese filled with jam in a heart-shaped hole, fresh fruits, two or three different meats, and chocolate-covered pretzels to include that necessary crunch. The Board Lady’s varying food platters and boxes will give your party guests something to ogle at and talk about.
Originally from Southampton, Pennsylvania, twenty-eight-year-old Laura Ferry creates lively food boards and boxes for holidays and special occasions in Providence. She created her business last year this month after getting furloughed from working in the hospitality industry. The time she had on her hands was used towards establishing this hobby-turned-career.
It was Ferry’s family who gave her the push to share these boards with other Rhode Island and Massachusetts residents, after bringing the creations to get-togethers for guests to admire and enjoy. “I would always make a board for our family or friends’ events, and they would ask ‘Are you selling these? They’re beautiful!’ That influenced me to move ahead with it,” says Ferry. “Their feedback and encouragement have been great.”
Most of the designs and food art on the platters and boxes are Ferry’s ideas, and at times, those ideas are shared with other food board businesses, so it’s an endless stream of concepts and support throughout these local and regional creators. According to Ferry, “There is a great community online in terms of other board businesses across the country, so a lot of us follow each other and take ideas from each other and make it our own.”
Those who’d like to order a box or board have plenty of options to choose from; besides the original cheese and meat boards, select a veggie board with vegetables and dip, a Mediterranean board with feta cheese, sundried tomatoes and more, vegan and gluten-free boards, and even dessert boards with cookies, brownies, dessert dip and other sweet tooth cravings. Not to mention, they all pair well with a glass of wine.
Ferry personally enjoys the half cheese, half dessert boards, which invites sweet and salty together for contrasting but tasty flavors. “The dessert adds a little bit more color than the cheese does, and it’s a nice variety,” says Ferry. Making the holiday boards also excites Ferry, with their easy themes, fun color coordination and different characters or designs.
Mini to large platters and boxes can be ordered from the form linked to Ferry’s Instagram, and check out past themed creations like Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter and more.
