House Lust: This Brutalist-Style Mansion Boasts the Best View in Providence
The Garden House, tucked in the crest of College Hill, is on the market.
The front entrance of the Garden House at 110 Congdon Street in Providence — with stately brick columns and shade-friendly shrubbery — doesn’t betray the big secret inside: It’s the bearer of the city’s best view, bar none.
Nicole Hofstetter of RI Real Estate Services compares it to “a glass bubble in the sky,” she says. “The entire house is floor-to-ceiling windows.”
The house, on the market for $2.45 million, was built in 1974 in the Brutalist style, a movement defined by hard geometric lines and heavy materials like concrete and brick. The Garden House — named for its garden-level living spaces carved into the side of College Hill — has no shortage of both but is softened, no doubt, by gorgeous sunsets over the city.
Other covetable features include a moss-covered indoor waterfall, two fireplaces, a soapstone kitchen and an infinity-type in-ground pool that “looks like you’re swimming into the State House,” Hofstetter says. The house also comes with an additional buildable lot on tony Pratt Street.
“There’s nothing like it in Providence,” she adds. “You get a lot of historic homes so it’s out of the ordinary to find something like this.”
