It’s not always easy to get to the farmers market or local farm store to pick up locally raised meat and eggs because of time constraints. As a busy mom, I used to hit up the farmers market on Saturday mornings, but now I’m ferrying my six-year-old to soccer games during that time frame. There’s an easy way to get some farmers market-quality proteins to your freezer and refrigerator. I was lucky enough to have a farm share filled with meaty breakfast goods delivered to me, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. My husband recently suffered a work injury, and he’s been confined to home. This means going out for breakfast or dinner at a restaurant is out of the question right now. I’ve been doing all the cooking at home, and when the package from Walden Local* arrived, I realized I could make the best farm-sourced breakfast right at home. The package came with fresh eggs, uncured maple bacon brined in maple syrup, Maine blueberry sausage, Vermont maple link sausage, sage sausage and more. All I had to do was not burn the eggs and bacon in the frying pan. I was successful.

If you’re interested in trying out Walden Local, you can choose between a variety of shares that include Just Grind (ground meat only, from $39 per month); a Basics share that includes ground meat, sausages, whole chicken or roasts ($49 per month); or Complete which includes all the Basics plus seasonal steaks and chops, ribs and roasts (from $79 per month). A Custom share also allows you to build your own share, starting at $84 per month.
Walden Local also has some add-ons to build your purchase, including local fish, uncured maple bacon, pasture-raised eggs and grass-fed ground beef by the pound. The company also donates 1 percent of the volume from the member program to local charities who provide meals to the underserved, including Second Chance Foods, Food Link and the Greater Boston Food Bank.
