Clearly, our judges were equally enamored with Dune House’s interior finishing and design choices as they were with its architecture. After considering each submission for cohesion and sense of completion, the panel agreed this project deserved the top spot. “It was the most successful at bringing the architecture inside,” said one jurist. “The completeness here is special.” Interior details are intentionally restrained: Whether inside or outside, the site remains the star. Bleached white oak cabinets and floors are reminiscent of driftwood, and painted board walls and ceilings are subtle yet effective. The styling treads the line between traditional and modern: Scandinavian inspired furnishings add modern flair, while the color choices reference the sea. “Inside is protected, a sanctuary, like a nut inside a shell,” observed another jurist.

This Craftsman-style home in Narragansett is a study in the fruition of meticulously conceptualized planning and superior craftsmanship. Every element of this home’s interior, from the myriad pieces of custom millwork to the decor choices, were thoughtfully considered and beautifully executed. “It’s intentional, a series of well-designed vignettes,” remarked one judge. Cherry tray ceilings separate the front foyer — which features a herringbone floor outlined in walnut and a dramatic custom staircase — from the open floorplan and living room. Open shelves in the kitchen, in lieu of upper cabinets, keep the space clean and airy. Mid-century modern inspired furnishings were chosen to complement the Craftsman architecture, and the color palettes throughout the common areas and bedrooms are beachy. “There are a lot of cool, fun things happening in here,” said another.

“Your shoulders relax while walking through this home” surmised one judge. This Jamestown home, which offers views of the Atlantic, exudes serenity (as a beach house should). The monochromatic palette is interspersed with soothing grays, blues and natural hickory. In the family room, the judges found “the whiteness of the background, combined with the subtle color of the upholstery, especially sophisticated.” Rattan accents and v-groove paneling add texture throughout the main floor and contribute to the design’s coastal spirit, while coffered ceilings and transom windows keep the space open and bright. The mostly white kitchen features a large stone pizza oven that, on its backside, serves as a second fireplace in the family room. The judges appreciated the comprehensive design and the overall flow from room to room. A separate guest suite and pool house were also part of this project, and both emit the same ease and sense of place as the main house.
