Thirty-five-year-old Amelia Olson recently opened her shop, Tall Tumbleweed Modern and Vintage in Riverside, after selling her original items on Etsy and Instagram for years. The shop procures stylish vintage clothing, jewelry, shoes, handbags, accessories and more.

Tall Tumbleweed is a small boutique on a friendly street that showcases previously loved fashion against interior design that includes wood floors, botanical plants, exposed brick and decorative rugs. The shop smells like bubbly Champagne with the sound of golden oldies reverberating in the background.

Before opening her shop, Olson was a writer and penned her own food column at a publication called Weekly Alibi, located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she originally grew up. Olson also wrote an advice column for nearly six years at Hello Giggles, a women’s empowerment website.

Growing up, Olson had always wanted her own store but never thought it would become a reality. The main goal of her new boutique is to make people feel comfortable and confident when walking in the door, and more importantly, when trying on clothing.

“My vibe and my objective is to have people come in here and feel good and we will make sure there is something that is going to fit your body right,” says Olson. Tall Tumbleweed welcomes women of all shapes and sizes and offers a space for women to feel comfortable in their own skin.

The shop stocks a wide range in sizes and specializes in plus-sized clothing. “Thick girls want to dress well, too,” says Olson. She says that she wants all women to visit the shop to hang out, listen to music and try on clothes for fun.

Tall Tumbleweed’s styles are divided into vintage and new sections of the store. Olson finds items for her shop through different buying platforms, and she makes an effort to search for styles that come in extra large and extra extra large.

Olson admits that it is tricky to stock those bigger sizes, but says it is possible to find them. “If shops don’t offer the bigger sizes, they’re not trying hard enough, and that is a real problem in this industry,” Olson says.

The vintage clothing is obtained from state sales, thrift stores, garage sales and more. Olson has a way of making all of her clothes look fresh, fun and unusual.

The prices range between new items and vintage clothing. The new items are marked a little higher than the vintage styles, but all are fairly priced.

Tall Tumbleweed is now open and offers online shopping as well.
