Where to Get Tested for the Coronavirus in RI Without Going to the Hospital

Dozens of sites across the state offer free COVID-19 tests for people with and without health insurance.

BEFORE YOU GO:

  • Always put in a call first, either to your primary care physician or the test site itself; you’ll need appointments and/or referrals for every site, even if you’re already a patient.
  • All sites are open to the public — even if you aren’t a patient — per federal mandates. You may need to complete a telemedicine screening before scheduling an appointment, though.
  • Some sites will not test pediatric patients or require that parents swab their own kids; one urgent care site, Just Kids Sick Care RI, only tests pediatric patients
  • Respiratory clinics offer tests for free to people with health insurance. If you don’t have health insurance, you will be charged for the test.
  • With the exception of the CVS Heath rapid results test site at Twin River, most test results will come back in three days
  • If you’re unsure about whether or not to get tested, check your symptoms on the Rhode Island COVID-19 self-checker
  • All tests produce false-negatives (read an ED doctor and epidemiologist’s perspective here) so people with symptoms are advised to self-quarantine, even if you get a negative result
