House Lust: Pleasure Island, a Private Island in Swansea’s Ocean Grove, is on the Market
The property, which also goes by Shady Isle, is connected to the mainland via bridge.
Some folks remember this place as Shady Isle, a beloved spot where families enjoyed clambakes beneath the trees. Others might recall its tenure as Pleasure Island, a rollicking banquet venue that went dark over a bridge dispute. Last year, the land mass just off the coast of Swansea was in the news again when a prospective buyer hoped to run the island — which is technically zoned residential — as a function facility, once again.
“Swansea had a special election on that during COVID, but [voters] shot it down so that deal fell apart,” says Genevieve Pappas of RE/MAX Right Choice, who listed the island over the summer. “We’ve had quite a bit of interest but nothing solid as of now. Most of the people I show it to are looking to use it for residential purposes, like a family compound.”
The island boasts four structures: a two-bedroom home, an open pavilion, an enclosed pavilion, and a waterfront structure that once housed a business office. The island is connected to the mainland via a 300-foot bridge and is hooked up to town water, gas and electric.
“Whoever buys it needs to do quite a bit relative to structures and bridge repairs,” Pappas says, adding that she walks prospective buyers over the bridge instead of driving over it with them.
The repairs are the buyers’ responsibility, says Pappas. But once they’re done, there’ll be nothing more to do but take pleasure in your own 4.25-acre island that’s close to all but far enough away to feel like paradise.
