It’s no wonder the late Senator John Chafee, a lifelong Republican, went on to become one of Congress’s foremost environmentalists. When you behold Earth’s glory from your bedroom window — rolling meadows, golden salt marsh, a river bend replete with waterfowl — surely you, too, would want to save it.
But our much-revered senator and governor shouldn’t get all the credit. His wife, Virginia, who died in 2020 at age ninety-three, was quieter about her conservationism but wielded private influence concerning her husband’s environmental policy decisions. The mother of six — including former Rhode Island Governor and current Wyoming resident, Lincoln Chafee — also tended organic gardens and raised geese, horses, ducks and chickens at her Potowomut estate, known in the family as Greene River Farm. According to her obituary, “To the end, she remained committed to the causes affecting life on our planet.”
Now, the place that harbored critical environmental work — from the local Green Acres program to the federal Clean Water Act, Superfund program and Clean Air Act, as well as Virginia’s efforts to preserve more than 300 acres along the Potomac — is on the market for its next stewards.
