House Lust: A Family Compound on a Private Island in Chepachet
Yes, Chepachet. And the property, once a bass fishing camp, is just as magical as it sounds.
This one’s for the nature lovers. Because at Blueberry Pointe, there’s land, there’s lake, there’s wildlife and there’s you. That’s it.
It’s been that way since 1929, when the property was established as a bass-fishing camp. Accessible only by private causeway, the two-acre island sits at the edge of the Smith and Sayles Reservoir in Chepachet and faces the Hopkins Woodland Town Forest.
Nothing against bass fishing, but its recent history is much more romantic. The current owners were married by the aptly named Sunset Rock and celebrated their twentieth anniversary here, too. For years, they ran a lauded bed and breakfast with private cottages — Heron’s Nest and Mallard’s Landing — affording different perspectives of the cove. The B and B’s signature dish was baked French toast with fresh blueberries plucked from bushes on the west side of the island. For the owners, every day felt like a vacation.
“Each season presents differently on the lake, among the gardens, and in the rooms of the house and cottages. The light and foliage and wildlife change,” they report in a statement via Mott and Chace Sotheby’s Karen Wilder. “The homes, land and surrounding environment interact as one, and it takes a while to become familiar with these natural relationships. We hope the next owner of this special property will enjoy that interaction as much as we have.”
