Specialty doughnuts have gained considerable popularity over the past few years with flavors from classic to unconventional. These five Rhode Island doughnut shops are worth a visit.

 

Allie’s Donuts

From classic doughnuts to custom-designed doughnut cakes, Allie’s Donuts has always been a local favorite. Stop by for glazed, frosted and sprinkle choices that will leave you wanting more. The shop’s cinnamon buns are also back with a new and improved recipe.

How to shop: Allie’s Donuts is open for in-person purchases from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

PVDonuts

Experience the taste of freshly made, and often over-the-top, specialty doughnuts at PVDonuts which offers signature-style brioche doughnuts as well as old fashioned classics like crullers, fritters and more. This shop has a monthly rotating menu with seasonal choices so your palate will never get bored.

How to shop: Orders can be placed in person or online on PVDonuts’ website. The shop is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

Knead Doughnuts

Sample the rich flavors of Knead Doughnuts which have a crisp exterior and tender interior. With daily vegan, flourless and classic options, this shop gives every diet preference a chance to try their creations. The store also sells doughnut-decorating kits that come with eight unglazed brioche doughnuts and an assortment of toppings.

How to shop: All three storefronts are open for in-person ordering. Only five customers will be allowed inside at one time, and there is no indoor seating. Anyone coming in should also wear a mask. The store on Cromwell Street in Providence is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The store on Elmgrove Ave. in Providence is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday through Monday, and the store in East Greenwich is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Monday.

McDaffa’s Doughnut Cakes

For handmade doughnut cakes made with fresh ingredients, order from McDaffa’s for pickup at Hope and Main in Warren. The creative cakes are perfect for birthdays and holidays and can be customized by design. The doughnut-cake-maker also has a standard selection of cakes with sprinkles so you can find one for the perfect occasion.

How to shop: Orders can be placed online and arranged for pickup or delivery from Hope and Main. The hours are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
