Outdoor Walking Trails

Head outside for a breath of fresh air, get some mental clarity (and even a bit of exercise) and take a hike.

Ballard Park
This park is essentially a quarry that has trails going around it. Check out the overlooks, which include a thirty-foot cliff overlooking an open meadow. The trails are short and this is a very kid-friendly hike. Wickham Road, Newport

Chase Farm
This 1.7-mile loop is an easy walk with beautiful views. Visit the butterfly garden, bring the dogs and pack a picnic. This plot of land is easily accessible for the whole fam. 667 Great Rd., Lincoln

Connors Farm
This spot is quiet and the entrance is in a residential neighborhood. While it’s not very well known, the Smithfield Land Trust calls it one of the most scenic trails they offer. There are some overlooks and beautiful stone walls to see. 24 Connors Farm Rd., Smithfield

Fisherville Brook Wildlife Refuge
Catch a glimpse of wildlife at one of the Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s wildlife refuges. Its ample scenery includes roughly 1,013 acres of fields, diverse forest habitats including a pond, streams,
a waterfall and even a historic cemetery. Pardon Joslin Road, Exeter

Goddard Park
Goddard Park is a popular spot in the West Bay for visitors throughout the year. Pack a picnic or a ball, bat and mitt to play catch on the spacious lawns. Or, take a walk on the forest trails and see a variety of different tree species. 1095 Ives Rd., Warwick

Lincoln Woods State Park
Nestled between Route 146 and Route 123, Lincoln Woods State Park is one of Blackstone Valley’s treasures. This 3.1-mile trail and open green space is a popular spot where visitors can enjoy trout fishing, playing ball, hiking, jogging and more. 2 Manchester Print Works Rd., Lincoln

Weetamoo Woods
This little East Bay wooded area has a loop trail of 5.8 miles and is a hike that people of all skill levels can enjoy. Don’t forget to check out High Rock while you are there for beautiful views at the highest point in the woods. East Road, Tiverton

Westconnaug Meadows
Ironically enough, there are no meadows at Westconnaug. If you’re into trees, they’re all labeled with short descriptions, including red oaks, white pines and sassafras. This trail is another good one for kids and has been called one of the most serene hikes in Rhode Island. George Washington Parkway, Scituate

Get Your Juice On

Bevvies, a nickname for the word beverages, is an East Bay juicery and smoothie bar owned by Emma McVeigh, nestled in the heart of Warren. Both McVeigh and her husband love to make their own juices and smoothies and have a passion for healthy, clean eating. Bevvies uses fresh, never frozen produce and locally sourced ingredients when possible.

Before ordering, consider this:
The most popular juice is the Liquid Sunshine, made with carrots, kale, oranges, strawberries, and apples. The most popular smoothie is the Muscle Beach, made with strawberries, blueberries, bananas, vanilla whey protein, peanut butter and almond milk.
Bevvies offers açaí bowls alongside their drinks. An açaí bowl is essentially a thicker smoothie in bowl form, with organic açaí juice as the base. Plus, it has a bunch of delicious toppings. The smoothie bowls are beneficial when looking for a healthier meal, extra protein and adding more fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet.
Shots are on the menu, too. They pack in vitamins, minerals and nutrients into a small amount of beverage.
There’s an allergy shot made with bee pollen (yes, you read that correctly). The allergy shot is not only delicious — it contains freshly made pineapple juice — but it can also help with seasonal allergies. Bee pollen is high in antioxidants and has anti-microbial properties, too.
Consider a juice cleanse. The juice cleanse contains five different juices and are customizable. Juice cleansing is beneficial for people who want to include more fruits and vegetables into their diet, regulate their digestion or have an overall body reset. Bevvies offers one- to five-day juice cleanses.

Talkin’ Telemedicine

If you’re stuck at home or can’t make it to the doctor’s office, a telemedicine visit may be the solution.

When it’s too difficult to get into the doc’s office and COVID has you homebound, book an appointment with Brown Emergency Medicine’s TeleCARE program. This program allows people of all ages to virtually visit a skilled physician from the comfort of home. Whether you have a mild rash or moderate abdominal pain, seeing a doc with the TeleCARE system is easy.

Doctors Gary Bubly and Susan Duffy are two of the many physicians who can be seen for an appointment. “COVID-19 really made [telemedicine] mainstream and, out of necessity, many people were forced to use a technology that was already there. You practice the same kind of medicine, but it’s just in a virtual setting,” says Duffy.

TeleCARE can be used by patients for a variety of health care issues they may be facing, including psychiatry.

“Certain specialties and practices have seen an increase in volume when they switch to telemedicine, so psychiatry in particular is made for it,” says Bubly. “It’s perfect because patients can avoid the stigma of walking into a psychiatrist’s office. They are less dependent on the physical exam in psychiatry, so it’s great for that.”

And according to Bubly, a TeleCARE appointment is just like walking into your doctor’s office for an exam. While the exam is the part that takes more creativity, so much of medicine is from the history of the patient anyway.
Accessing the TeleCARE system is simple and can be done anywhere with internet access. Plus, the website is easy to use. Just locate the tab for either a pediatric or adult appointment, select a time slot and fill out your information. You’ll receive a confirmation email and text message, informing you which physician you will be seeing the day of your appointment. TeleCARE is available from noon to midnight every day of the week at a time suitable for your schedule and needs. brownemtelecare.org
