The Reef in Newport has a whole new look that channels the seven seas and the menu will take you on a sailing voyage all over the world. The waterside patios at 10 Howard Wharf are all decked out with fire pits, dining tables, lounge seating and Newport’s only grove of palm trees. There’s even a dock where you can pull up your dinghy for free, but maybe not your mega-yacht.

The restaurant is all about celebrating international flavor as it is inspired by sailors who travel around the world. The new owners are lifelong sailor Robert Flaxman and his wife, Leslie, who bought the restaurant right before the pandemic, but then closed to renovate during the down time. The coastal-inspired space now has three bars, two waterside patios with fire pits, lounge seating and more, and the restaurant, which has the capacity for 500 guests, is also available for private corporate events, birthday parties, wedding celebrations and more. The formal dining room shows off waterfront views through floor-to-ceiling glass windows, or there’s the option for a more intimate patio party with a bar and live deejay.

The new menu represents “global ports of call” with multicultural dishes like lobster a la vodka, tuna poke, seafood bouillabaisse, empanadas and chickpea fries, plus classic New England favorites like a hot and cold lobster roll.

The Reef’s new director of culinary development, Jon LoPresti, formerly worked at Newport’s Stoneacre Brasserie/Garden in Newport and served as executive sous chef at 41 North. LoPresti has also held executive culinary positions at Laurel Links Country Club, Ocean Grill, Oceana and the Water Club, in addition to Bullshead Bar and Grill and Bridgehampton Cafe in the Hamptons.

The Reef is now open for indoor and outdoor dining on Wednesday and Thursday from 4-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from noon to 10 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. Hours will expand to seven days as of Memorial Day weekend. Takeout and delivery are available Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.
