Following the closure of former live music venue DUSK, entertainers are seeking support to revitalize the live music and art scene on Harris Ave. A petition on change.org has garnered thousands of signatures across New England asking for a new breath of life to their treasured space.

For many years, DUSK stood as a supportive space for diverse artists and musicians. After being forced to close earlier this year, 189 Development LLC has issued a request for proposals to re-open the space. Some suggested ideas, such as a coffee shop or bookstore, have been met with opposition.

Those who frequented DUSK support the idea of re-opening the space on Harris Ave. under a new name while maintaining the spirit of live performances and artistic collaboration.

The petition’s creator, Matt Bower, writes that Danielle Tellier, former bartender and longtime entertainment booker at DUSK, has submitted a proposal to bring back arts and live music to the venue.

“If DUSK meant something to you and you want to see the arts and live music return to 301 Harris Ave., please add your name and support, and spread the word,” says Bower.

The change.org petition, along with a letter written by Bower, was recently submitted to 189 Development LLC, who plans to select a candidate for the space by early October. As of Aug. 13, the petition has gained over twelve hundred signatures.

Community members and adamant supporters of live music have left comments outlining the importance of having such an establishment in the Harris Ave neighborhood. Many hope to preserve the character and longstanding history of supporting diverse artists across many genres and walks of life, especially the hardcore and underground scene.

“Dusk was an incredible establishment that became an integral part of the RI live music community,” says signee Judy Grayko. “We must protect these venues as they are disappearing all too frequently. Art and Music will always be a positive way to bring people together. This matters!”

Opposers of continuing a live entertainment space on Harris Ave. have also voiced their concerns, believing that art is a “luxury, not a necessity.”
