A long-awaited brewery transition is taking shape on Providence’s West Side, with an official opening date set within the month.

Cheyne and Erika Tessier plan to unveil the new home of Origin Beer Project at a grand opening party on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 425 W Fountain St., the same building shared by Y Noodle & Bar and the Slow Rhode. The space was formerly home to Beer On Earth, which closed in February of this year.

Origin Beer Project opened in 2020 as an alternating proprietorship brewery operating inside Buttonwoods Brewery in Cranston. Earlier this year, the owners announced plans to relocate to Providence and a Mainvest campaign to support the move. After closing the Cranston location on Sept. 29 and several weeks of buildout, the Tessiers are now ready to reveal their first standalone location to customers and fans.

“It’s a completely different space. You’re not even going to realize that Long Live or Beer On Earth used to be there,” Erika says.

Though they’ve been tight-lipped about the aesthetic on social media, Erika says the new tasting room has a whimsical, ethereal vibe that fits their beer styles and labels. The space is fitted out with decor and fixtures from local artists and vendors, including Eden Botanical Arts of Cranston, Nick Holcomb of Holcomb Guitars and Andrew Knox of Knox Neon. In keeping with current trends, they’ve also devoted special attention to the bathroom, ensuring it’s as selfie-friendly as possible.

“Everything that we’ve done and every decision we made was very purposeful,” she says. “Cheyne and I are putting ourselves out there. We want everything to be really thoughtful, and we put a lot of thought into what would make people comfortable.”

Along with beer, Erika says they plan to offer mocktails and other nonalcoholic options for those not planning to imbibe. Though food trucks may pop up occasionally, they encourage guests to take advantage of the neighborhood’s plentiful food options, which — in addition to the Slow Rhode and Y Noodle & Bar — include Bayberry Beer Hall, Pizza J and There, There.

The space has long been an incubator for new or expanding breweries. Before Beer On Earth, it housed Long Live Beerworks, which now operates its main taproom a short distance away on Sprague Street and a second location in Boston. The neighborhood was also where Cheyne and Erika lived when they first started dating, making it a homecoming for the couple. Erika says they’ve had support from Moniker Brewery across the street as well as other area businesses and recently participated in the Halloween Extravaganza in Dexter Park.

“While we were very incredibly thankful to Buttonwoods for offering us the chance to start our business the way that we started so that we could grow more organically, I’m excited to put out all of our ideas out into the universe. I have a feeling it’s going to be incredibly humbling to see who all makes it out to show support,” she says.

The grand opening party is planned for Saturday, Dec. 2, from 1 to 10 p.m., with special releases and food available onsite. Follow @originbeerproject for more opening updates.
