Wave Hello to Your New Rhode Island License Plate
The Rhode Island people have spoken and proved that we will always remain true to our Ocean State ways.
After more than 940 design submissions, nearly 300,000 votes and almost as many opinion-filled tweets, the Ocean State’s new license plate has finally been revealed. And if you think it looks a little familiar, you aren’t wrong: The design, which was created by South Kingstown resident and RISD alum Willem Van Lancker, pays direct tribute to the wave plate that has adorned our bumpers for the past two decades and reimagines it with choppier waters, a bluer hue and a more stylish nickname font. In a press event Wednesday, Governor McKee called the fresh depiction a, “symbol of Rhode Island’s evolution over the years.” Van Lancker’s design was a clear winner amongst the five finalists presented last month with almost 52 percent of the vote, and officials have said Rhode Islanders can expect to start seeing it on the road within the next three to four months.
