Newport Restaurant Group Brings Back La Vecina Popup Taco Takeout Spot
The taqueria is lead by Bar ‘Cino’s executive chef Mariana Gonzalez-Trasvina and it will eventually have its own restaurant space.
La Vecina is Newport Restaurant Group’s up-and-coming Mexican restaurant. It has returned to Bar ‘Cino as a “ghost kitchen,” which is a commissary-type space only set up for takeout and delivery orders, but it will eventually have its own space. The taqueria began as a popup lead by Bar ‘Cino’s executive chef Mariana Gonzalez-Trasvina, who has crafted a menu to honor her family’s generational recipes right from Mexico City. La Vecina’s brick-and-mortar opening is set for this spring, but for a taste of what’s to come, Bar ‘Cino is offering takeout and delivery daily from 4 to 9 p.m.
“While we put the finishing touches on La Vecina’s brick-and-mortar location, we’re excited to bring back chef Mariana’s hand-crafted Mexican street food through a ghost kitchen until we open our doors this spring,” says Shawn Westhoven, the beverage director for Newport Restaurant Group.
Newport Restaurant Group has built a collection of award-winning restaurants all across Rhode Island. Some of the highlights include Castle Hill Inn, the Mooring Seafood Kitchen and Bar, 22 Bowen’s Wine Bar and Grille, Bar ‘Cino and Smoke House in Newport alone. Newport Restaurant Group has even expanded its reach to Massachusetts, with restaurants outside the greater Boston area. The group strives to provide a high-quality culinary experience and to create menus with a creative, thoughtful and responsible approach.
La Vecina’s menu features a blend of classic Mexican dishes and elevated street food. Spicy marinated shrimp with charred scallion aioli, pastor pork with avocado-salsa verde and a braised short rib are among some of the most popular items. There are also handmade street tacos, street corn-style squash and mushrooms and an assortment of antojitos or “street snacks” including shrimp ceviche, tostada frijol and tamales verdes. Top it all off with a tres leches or Mexican spiced hot chocolate torte, or order from the selection of Cocteles del la Casa (house cocktails) to-go.
