House Lust: An Iconic Weekapaug Summer Cottage is on the Market
It was one of the first in a wave of homes that established Weekapaug as a preeminent summer colony.
For the first time in six generations, 3 Fenway Road in Weekapaug is on the market.
It’s easy to understand why the family held onto it for so long; it’s summer incarnate, timeless and functional and capable of drawing in the best of the season. And it was built that way — the right way, the way all summer houses should be — in 1877, along with eight others in the first wave of cottages that would make up the summer colony of Weekapaug in Westerly. Then came the larger oceanfront mansions and Weekapaug Inn, and not much has changed since then. The enclave still functions as it did at the start with tennis courts, croquet, a yacht club, pond and beach access and other amenities that forge a community by the sea.
Shingled with smoky green trim that evokes the New England seaside, the house has a wide porch that faces west to capture sunsets over the Atlantic. The interior is paneled in cool, dark wood — a tonic after hot sunny days on Fenway Beach. And with seven bedrooms carved out of the upstairs, there’s plenty of room for the next six generations to come and stay.
