House Lust: A Charming 1830s Cape on Peeptoad Pond in Scituate is on the Market
The main house and a stand-alone carriage house apartment both boast views of the water.
This property, at the corner of Elmdale and Harmony roads in Scituate, boasts nine acres, six of which potentially could be subdivided into two salable lots.
“But everyone who comes to see it doesn’t want to split it up, anyway,” says Residential Properties’ Debbie Mann, who listed the property earlier this month with her realty team, DeMascole, Rossi and Mann. “It’s a beautiful piece of property — just gorgeous.”
Its splendor is on full display this time of year; the fields have gone golden, the foliage is ablaze and the lily pad-covered Peeptoad Pond reflects the bluest autumn sky. It’s no wonder potential buyers would hope to keep it intact (as of publication, it is not yet under contract).
The main house, an 1830s Cape-style cottage, is also worth preserving. The kitchen has been updated but original details abound, including the wide-plank pine floors, three fireplaces and two staircases. Replica six-over-six windows add an historic touch, too, and continue through to the carriage house apartment a stone’s throw from the main house. The original carriage house was blown over in a hurricane, Mann says, so the current homeowners rebuilt it in 1983 and added a legally zoned apartment with its own address.
The two dwellings share the lot, but the in-ground pool and patio are contained within a fence at the rear of the main house. Both are a mere stroll across the yard to Peeptoad Pond, which is not open to public recreation but is used by waterfront homeowners for canoeing, kayaking, fishing and, in the season that shan’t be named, ice skating.
