Trends from different decades often make a comeback to remind us of the fabulous past. Currently it’s Y2K and ’90s nostalgia that’s experiencing a resurgence. Hair stylist and business owner Kayla Newman recently opened the salon Hauscall to pay tribute to those eras.

Newman was also the mind behind Haus of Color, an East Providence hair salon that specialized in vivid dyes and edgy cuts. “Haus of Color taught me so much and was my first baby. In the end, I outgrew what that salon became,” she says. She opened the salon in 2021 when COVID was on the rise and closed it last year.

Newman and her husband, Jeremy — East Providence residents for six years — homed in on an ideal studio spot on Taunton Avenue and opened Hauscall in January. “It’s a dream location,” says Newman. “By bringing my salon to this area, I’m adding another dimension to East Providence, the city that I love,” she says.

Located next to Cafe Zara and across from City Hall, Hauscall has some aspects of Haus of Color but with different branding. “We wanted a brand that anyone can identify with,” Newman says. “Haus of Color felt more feminine-forward, this one leans toward gender-neutral.”Jn25ec69sho

The interior’s white walls are flocked with black stars and whimsical butterflies, while Y2K magazines peek out from racks, inspiring hair looks for clients. A ’90s-style payphone puts the call in Hauscall and a glass table holds an assortment of snacks and refreshments. “People walk in and are shocked because they expect to see this place in LA and New York, not in a small town in the smallest state,” says Newman.

The salon specializes in vivid hair color, but also provides classic hair color, haircuts, gel nails and more. Newman hopes to add tooth gems, permanent jewelry and tattoo pop-ups to the list of Hauscall’s services and specials.

Newman, who has been featured in Entrepreneur magazine, also plans to step back from behind the chair and focus on making her own products, creating a line of merch and sharing her knowledge with others through education.

“I want this place to be more than just a hair salon,” Newman says. “I want it to be a collaborative space where there aren’t limits and everyone feels welcome.” hauscall.glossgenius.com
