While we may have just sang the praises of six different fall escapes in our October issue, we also agree with Travel Lemming‘s assertion that another top travel destination lies in our very own backyard. The online travel guide recently posted its annual “50 Best Places to Travel” bucket list for 2023, and coming in at number forty-nine is the Ocean State’s “hidden gem” Block Island.

Travel Lemming writer Victoria Folz encourages visitors to “take a ferry or sailboat to the shores of Block Island, the perfect place to unwind and live on island time,” commending the area for its boat-filled harbors, bicycle-friendly culture and surplus of unique eateries and shops. Folz also highlights how one can tick many of the island must-do items—like hitting the farmer’s market, exploring the historic district, taking in the clifftop lighthouse scenery and lounging on the beach while enjoying a mudslide and a view of “some of the most brilliant sunsets on the East Coast”—in a single day.

The 2023 list is born of a collaborative effort by the entire Travel Leming team. Starting in September, each of their travel writers submit nominations for their favorite secret spots across the globe. In October, the site’s editorial board—which consists of a few staff editors and writers along with a couple guest contributors— together decides which places make the cut and also gives each a rating in order to tabulate the final standing. Next comes fact checking to ensure the recommendations are up to date and voila, the list is ready to share! As the website states, “The end result is what we [at Tavel Lemming] think is our best list yet – and we hope you do too!’ To learn more about Travel Lemming and to see the full list of recommendations, visit
