Applications Open for Rhode Island Black Business Association College Scholarship
Applicants must be Black or Afro-Latinx, a resident of Rhode Island, a high school senior in the Fall of 2022, and will begin their freshman year of college in the Fall of 2023.
The Rhode Island Black Business Association (RIBBA) has gifted scholarships to thousands of young, Black students aspiring to a higher education. And now, they are accepting applications for a 2022 Scholarship.
RIBBA, and its charitable arm, the Institute of Economic Empowerment and Development, or IEED, launched its scholarship program back in 2020, awarding students anywhere from $500 to $1,000 as they entered college or a university. To date, RIBBA has given out more than $45,000 in scholarships and helped many incoming freshmen to overcome financial obstacles. Amanda Roman, the Director of Program Development and Operations at RIBBA, understands the problems that Black students encounter as they apply to college.
“There are a wide number of systemic barriers and challenges that Black young adults face, and we hope this scholarship opportunity helps each recipient reach their full academic and career potential,” says Roman. “Financial investments are an essential part of creating a more equitable education system and we are proud to be providing this and other opportunities to students.”
The Scholarship Program is just one component of the LEAP Initiative, launched in 2020 by IEED to provide support and training to individuals through their early academic years. LEAP also offers a mentor program, executive coaching, financial literacy training and skills development. The initiative’s programs and services were developed with RIBBA’s Community Advisory Board of Young Adults to support scholarship recipients on their academic and career journey.
