Sojourner House, a Providence-based nonprofit that supports survivors of abuse, is hosting a fundraising event, “Believing Women: Writers on Silence, Shame, and Sexual Violence.” It’s not only a fundraising event, but it’s also an invitation to listen, witness and stand with survivors.

This powerful evening of art and storytelling brings together voices from the community, featuring bold, intimate readings by acclaimed authors Grace Talusan (The Body Papers), Christine Murphy (Notes on Surviving the Fire), Nina MacLaughlin (Wake, Siren), and Michelle Bowdler (Is Rape a Crime? A Memoir, an Investigation, and a Manifesto). Join this call to speak out, stand together, and dismantle the silence that has long kept survivors in the shadows.

Surrounded by the living beauty of Jordan’s Jungle greenhouse, you can gather in a space where growth, resilience, and healing take root. The night will display the art from Sojourner House’s recent exhibition, “Dear Survivor.” In between readings, you’re also invited to explore the art, connect with fellow guests, and enjoy cocktails or mocktails from the Sippin’ Pretty pop-up. Heartleaf Books, a bookstore co-op, will be onsite selling books from all appearing authors.

Proceeds from the event will support Sojourner House’s efforts to provide safe housing and essential support services for survivors of abuse. A cornerstone of care since 1976, Sojourner House served nearly 2,000 clients in 2023 alone. Through events like this, they aim to further their mission of advocacy, education, and healing in the face of sexual violence.

The event is $15 per person, and it will be held on May 1 from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at Jordan’s Jungle in Pawtucket. Click here to register and learn more.
