After winning in a record-breaking match last weekend (8-1 victory over Miami FC), Rhode Island FC (RIFC) is gearing up for its first-ever playoffs game scheduled for this weekend.

The team will take on Indianapolis’s Indy Eleven this Sunday in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals for a single-elimination, fixed bracket playoff race. If they make it past this first playoff match, they’ll be well on their way to winning it all in the USL Championship Final on Saturday, Nov. 23.

RIFC closed out the regular season with a 12W-15D-7L record and finished strong with an unbeaten record for the last six matches heading into the postseason, with its last loss coming on Sept. 14. A notable moment from the season was when RIFC forward JJ Williams scored the club’s first-ever hat trick during the record-breaking victory over Miami FC last weekend.

The secret to the team’s success might just have to do with their unbreakable team spirit and a family atmosphere on the field. “That’s really what they’re trying to build and something that we really focused on early in the year and trying to make sure that the culture and the team energy was right because that can take you so far,” says Williams.

The team takes on Indy Eleven in Indianapolis this Sunday at 1 p.m. You can catch the game on NESN, ESPN+ or 790 The Score — you can also head over to the Thirsty Beaver Pub & Grub in Smithfield for a watch party during the game.
