House Lust: Atop the Ocean House, the Carousel Evokes a Bygone Era
The condominium, inside the iconic Ocean House hotel in Watch Hill, is on the market.
The Carousel suite is akin the Ocean House itself: Contemporary in design, but timeless in spirit.
The hotel, in the heart of tony Watch Hill, opened just after the Civil War. For decades, a wealthy clientele flocked here to soak up summer by the sea in an exclusive resort community. But, by the early aughts, the aged hotel had deteriorated beyond repair and was demolished. After a plan for a slew of new mansions was met with outcry, a local developer built a new structure in its place that evoked the original Ocean House — yellow Victorian facade and all — while also incorporating a handful of private condominium suites.

The condos, which the owners can let out through the Ocean House, rarely hit the market. But, in late March, Mott and Chace Sotheby’s listed the Carousel suite for sale. Named after the historic Watch Hill Carousel, the condominium’s defining feature is a three-season room in the round with views of the Atlantic. In the opposite direction, the space affords sightlines of Little Narragansett Bay.
These days, Watch Hill isn’t as genteel as it once was. (I’m no Daisy Buchanan, and even I’ve had cocktails on the Ocean House lawn.) But the grandness and decadence — and, yes, utter exclusiveness — of a bygone era lives on in spaces like this. Care to indulge in a spin around the Carousel? Here’s your House Lust:
