House Lust: Scandinavian-Style Pied-a-Terre or Pink Center-Hall Colonial?
Both homes were built in the 1800s and are in the $380,000 range. The similarities stop there.
I want both.
Therein lies the trouble with the spring real estate deluge. I dare you: Scroll through Zillow or RILiving for a few minutes and just try not to fall in love with a place. Yesterday, while I was poking around for this week’s House Lust, I found two.
They’re both historic and they’re around the same price point. But one, a top-to-bottom renovated cottage in Newport’s Broadway neighborhood, is pure Scandinavian hygge, read: Everything is white. White wide-plank pine floors, white textiles, white bathroom vanity with deep white farmhouse basin and white subway tile — heck, even a white wood-burning stove. Non-white details are simple and natural: Sanded exposed beams, soapstone countertops, herringbone maple bar. It’s lovely.
The second home, on the other hand, is an ornate, chromatic wonderland. The exterior, for starts, is pink. Color continues inside the architectural gem in North Smithfield’s Union Village, which was built in 1851: red living room with decadent crown molding, punchy wallpaper in the dining room, seafoam green cabinets in the kitchen. A tasteful full bath, in black and white with penny tile, offers luxury on the second floor. But the first-floor powder room, with retro green tile and striped wallpaper, speaks to the quirky heart of this historic home. It’s equally as lovely as the first.
Which would you choose? Take a look inside in this week’s House Lust:
