History Lesson
Newcomer Hammetts Hotel perches on a prominent corner of Newport’s vibrant working waterfront, with a walkway that connects the surrounding neighborhood with the harbor’s edge. The hotel’s internal courtyard is a place where guests can relax as well as a public space for visitors to take in the maritime views. Our jurors praised the substantial thought that went into the urban planning of this project. The transformation turned a one-time vacant parking lot into an accessible 24,000-square-foot space, while also picking up on the historical context of the nearby buildings. “It’s how people want to experience the water.”

Refuge in a storm
This heartfelt project proves you don’t need an unlimited budget to create a home. Help Her Home, a volunteer group of interior designers and industry professionals, partnered with the Sojourner House to transform a four-bedroom house into a sweet refuge for mothers and kids escaping domestic violence. Our jurors applauded the result, with assistance that included a $5,000 donation by AAA Northeast. “It deserves recognition for creating a welcoming safe space on a budget.”
