It’s a Monday night in Providence and pediatrician Susan Stuart is in office discussing treatment options with a patient. Stuart tilts the patients jaw up, analyzing areas on the patients face and jaw. The patient wants a more youthful glow, and Stuart brings out a machine that helps eliminate lines and promotes collagen production. Not a typical appointment for a pediatrician, right? That’s because this isn’t a pediatric appointment. While Stuart has held the title of pediatrician for over twenty years, she also doubles as owner of an aesthetic medicine spa, Wells Fountain.
Stuart had been working as a pediatrician on the Newport Navy base when the September 11th attacks caused her to reevaluate her career as a service member, due to the possibility of deployment. With her five children at the forefront of her mind, Stuart left the Navy and, along with her husband, opened a private practice in Westerly, specializing in pediatric care. After years caring for children, it was her patients’ parents who gave Stuart the idea to branch out into aesthetic medicine.
“The moms got together and said ‘Susan, you give our kids shots every day, why aren’t you giving injections?’ They wanted Botox,” says Stuart. “There were some exam rooms that I turned into injection rooms and just started from there.”
After completing the necessary courses, Stuart began the routine of doing pediatrics during the day and switching gears to aesthetics at night. The two businesses share a location but with two separate LLCs. Due to the success of the first location, a second and third location were opened in Providence and East Greenwich. The East Greenwich location is where Stuart does most of her weight loss management for clients while Providence and Westerly involve more services.
“So, I’ve treated children forever and now I get to treat their moms,” says Stuart.
With locations in Westerly, Providence and East Greenwich, Wells Fountain offers a multitude of services, including injections, microneedling, laser and body contouring. What really sets the business apart isn’t just its services, but its machinery. Client and Real Housewives of Rhode Island star Jo-Ellen Tiberi, who also works in medical device sales, has put Stuart on to most of the devices Wells Fountain is equipped with.
“Every time she has a new device, she wants me to get it for the business,” says Stuart. “I don’t think there’s anybody in the entire state that has every device that I have. Many people will have CO2 laser, but they’re not going to have AviClear. We offer pelvic floor therapy and muscle building, among so many other services. It’s those special additions that help us stand out.”
Some prospective clients may be a little worried about the idea of cosmetic work, but at Wells Fountain it can be as invasive as the client would like.
“I always do a consultation and while some people know exactly what they want, others don’t know where to begin,” says Stuart. “I have patients who want it all and others who are hesitant, so they come for facial peels, or they’ll have a mask done that gives them a lot of hydration and good skin quality.”
Stuart enjoyed this career path so much that she inspired others to begin their aesthetic medicine careers as well. Sarah Boozam had been bringing her children to Stuarts pediatric office for years when Stuart approached the RN about joining her in aesthetic medicine. After being guided through which classes to take, Boozam completed the education required to become an aesthetic medicine profession, joining Stuart at Wells Fountain.
“I got it done then asked her, now what? She just goes ‘now join me,’” says Boozam. “I’m so grateful for her, she’s just such a good person you know? She always respects what the client wants and prioritizes quality above all else.”
Today, Stuart looks forward to bringing in more clients while maintaining the solid relationships she has with current ones. The idea of teaching classes to those interested in aesthetic medicine isn’t out of the questions, but Stuart currently aims to maintain the patient contact and care that helps Wells Fountain stand out.
“As my patients age, I age along with them,” says Stuart. “It’s a really wonderful thing to get to aid in my patients living their healthiest lives while feeling good in their skin.”
