Only Four Days Left Until Rhode Island’s License Plate Fate is Sealed
Waves, sunsets or the Newport Bridge…. Which plate will the people pick?
In case you haven’t heard—though we’re not sure how that’s possible—the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles and Governor McKee’s office recently unveiled five front-runners for the state’s new license plate design and it is now up to Rhody residents to determine the final look.
The change, which will replace the twenty-five-year-old wave-on-white design and make future improperly registered cars easier to spot on the road, is not something locals are taking lightly, to say the least. Rhode Islanders have always had a peculiar obsession with license plates (we all know someone with a single digit or Ocean State-themed vanity plate), and, for many, the new options are not quite up to par. The fairly (some have said woefully) simple designs range from a calm sunset to blue choppy waves to depictions of the Newport Bridge.
On Twitter, the reactions have ranged from less than impressed…
… to calls for more creative interpretations …
… to the blasé.
When asked to choose a favorite of the bunch, the collective feeling of the Rhode Island Monthly staff was, well, also largely underwhelmed. Yet a clear winner did come out on top: Roughly 55% of us chose the more colorful of the Pell Bridge options (see below), while the still-water yellow and blue design tied for second with the blue-all-over design, and the other bridge plate came in third. No one voted for the yellow and blue wave alternative.
Regardless of how you feel about the finalists, though, these are the plates we’ve been dealt, folks. If you haven’t put your two cents in yet, head on over to the DMV’s official poll here. Voting will end promptly on Monday, March 28, at 11:59 p.m.
