The project: Two clients, one an artist, the other an engineer, with different visions sharing a Providence loft.
What the judges liked in 2011: The architects divided a raw space and created a double loft that speaks to both partners, using contrasting materials, casework and details that play well together.
Why we like it now: The design successfully satisfies two different aesthetics: the light-filled, serene surroundings of an artist brush up alongside the raw materials and “working on race cars” mindset favored by an engineer. The use of woods warms up the industrial feel; the choice of chairs and tables is very sculptural; pendant lighting illuminates the common spaces. “It’s the interior design equivalent of successful couples’ therapy.”
