Back to Basics
The project: The design of three new DEM buildings at Lincoln Woods State Park.
What the judges liked in 2017: An execution that they called “rich and well-done.” The buildings, which house a nature center, concessions and bathrooms, have a classic park style underscored with the use of simple, rustic materials including granite, timber and metal for the roofs.
Why we like it now: The look is very clean and blends into the landscape, harkening back to the days of the WPA and its use of solid, top-of-the-line materials and good craftsmanship. “It’s not your typical dreary state building,” said one of our staffers. “Instead it’s a good use of taxpayer money — one we can be proud of.”
