But don't pour one out for our old friend — the South County institution is just entering a new era.

With the number of disheartening closings lately, seeing any iteration of “for sale” or “sold” next to a beloved institution’s name in a headline is often enough to put a pit in any local’s stomach. But in the case of the Mews Tavern down in Wakefield, it’s looking like the kids just may be alright.

Today, the Heritage Restaurant Group — which has scooped up all sorts of longtime Rhody biz from Brick Alley Pub in Newport to the historic Old Canteen (now Wally’s Wieners) in Providence — revealed that it is under contract to acquire the iconic South County pub. The announcement comes with the promise that it will continue operating on Main Street and maintain the same character and atmosphere that have drawn in townies and visitors alike for generations.

“The Mews Tavern is part of Wakefield’s identity,” says Matt Lyons, spokesperson for Heritage Restaurant Group. “Our mission is to protect and strengthen what already matters. In an environment where independent restaurants face unprecedented pressure, helping ensure The Mews’ future is exactly why Heritage was formed.”

As someone who grew up on the tavern’s wood-fired pizzas, ordered one of her first legal beers from its extensive ’69 on tap’ menu, stapled upwards of $20 worth of sharpie-emblazoned George Washingtons to the walls of its dollar bar over the years and just participated in her first Mews’ 5k this past fall, the group’s emphasis on preservation gives me hope. Another comforting factor: the Mews’ current general manager, George McAuliffe, will retain his role under the new ownership.

“It was incredibly important that The Mews’ next chapter be written with care,” says McAuliffe. “This restaurant has always been more than a business, it’s a home for our staff, our regulars, and the Wakefield community. Heritage Restaurant Group understands what The Mews represents, and I’m confident they will honor its legacy while providing the support needed for long-term success.”

Likewise, the Heritage Restaurant Group poses that the purchase aligns with its purpose of preserving heritage businesses, respecting their histories and providing operational support that allows local restaurants to remain up and running.

“This is about preservation, not expansion,” Lyons added. “The Mews has been a gathering spot with history and heart. Our role is to keep the soul intact, invest thoughtfully, and ensure it remains a vibrant part of South County for generations to come.”

Pending customary approvals, the transaction  is expected to close later this year. So, no need to pour one out for our old friend — The Mews Tavern should be here to stay. 456 Main St., Wakefield, 401-783-9370, mewstavern.com
