Foster a Furry Friend this Festive Season
The Potter League for Animals's Host a Howliday Houseguest program returns with the mission of making local shelter dogs' holiday season brighter.
No one should be alone during the holidays — even if they have a tail. (Or, rather, especially if they have a tail).
That’s why the Potter League for Animals is bringing back its Host a Howliday Houseguest program from December 22 to December 27. The short-term foster initiative encourages Rhode Islanders to open their homes and provide comfort and companionship to a shelter dog for four to six days. This gives the pups a chance to get a much needed break from the shelter environment and enjoy individual attention in a cozier, low-stress setting. In turn, fosters will get a happy and grateful guest to enjoy the holidays with.
As the Potter League puts it: “Whether it’s a quiet night on the couch or a few peaceful, unhurried walks around the neighborhood, the experience can be deeply meaningful for both the animal and the foster family. Fostering a dog—even for just a few days—can bring warmth, healing, and unexpected joy to both pets and people. This small act of compassion offers peace, purpose, and companionship—lifting their spirits and yours.”
The program also makes it super easy for first-time fosters to get involved by providing all necessary food, supplies and support throughout the dog’s stay. Fosters will also have the opportunity to meet the potential houseguest in advance to ensure it is a good match for both parties. Note: if you have another dog at home, you will be asked to bring them along for an introduction.
To be eligible, fosters must be eighteen or older and live in Rhode Island within forty miles of the Potter League Animal Care and Adoption Center in Middletown. While no previous fostering experience is necessary, they do ask that you have a pet-friendly home and the availability to hang with the pup during the few days of fostering.
