Hidden in Plain Sight

Riverhead Building Supply provides creative, customized solutions for this unique kitchen undertaking.

The owner of this spacious home had big plans for her kitchen remodel—a project that would prove to present a number of unique challenges. When she turned to Riverhead Building Supply, a building supply company with showrooms in Middletown, North Kingstown and Westerly, their team was excited to rise to the occasion, get creative and help make her dream a reality.

Riverhead’s designer, Kerry Janis, worked directly with the client from the jump, taking the time to discuss and plot out the logistics and aesthetics. “The customer had great ideas,” she says. “She was open to asymmetry and a mix of finishes, which is great. Not many people are comfortable with asymmetry.”  One example in this design is the upper cabinets to the left of the sink while floating wood shelves sit in the corner to the right.

A challenge was the powder room that connects to the left end of the kitchen. Though the owner planned to open up the adjacent wall to the dining room (see: beautiful wooden beams bordering the expanded kitchen entrance), she also wanted to retain the unconventional bathroom entry so the adjoining hallway could instead serve as private access to the bedrooms. But how does one camouflage a bathroom door in the kitchen? Well, by making it look like a second pantry, of course.

“The homeowner saw the idea online,” Janis explains. “We ordered a similar pantry door style and adjusted some of the measurements and then her installer, who was very talented, fit it to the spot. A kitchen like this with custom orders needs collaboration, and he always ‘made it work!’”

The overall goal was to preserve the layout as much as possible. Riverhead Building Supply’s designer recommended Potter’s Mill Flat Panel style doors from Medallion to use throughout the kitchen. At one end of the kitchen, the walk-in style doors seamlessly frame the newly installed full-width glass-front cabinets along with the cherry floating shelf beneath.

“For colors, we knew she wanted white, so we chose ‘Sea Salt’ for the cabinetry,” Janis says. “Then, to create some warmth, we added in the cherry wood with a ‘Cappuccino’ stain and ‘Burnt Sienna’ glaze and highlight for the floating shelves.”

The client also loved the designer’s suggestion of ‘Celeste’ blue for the base of the island—a pop of color in an otherwise neutral space.

“The design needed to be clean-lined and easy to care for,” says Janis. “And then they all cook, so including a large island was a must.”

Riverhead supplied the Medallion Gold full overlay cabinetry—full overlay doors optimize the storage space and grant full access to the snack forager—featured throughout the space. In addition, they provided the Andersen windows and warm-toned wood floors. Riverhead’s customized solutions surpassed even the client’s expectations and made it so she, her husband and their two teenage boys will be able to fully enjoy the fruits of their kitchen for years to come.
