Murder Mystery, Clue, Opens at PPAC
The classic whodunit board game translates to the stage as a sharp-humored musical combined with theatrical chaos.
Your favorite murder mystery game has officially hit the stage, landing in Providence for a weekend filled with serious case-solving, and just the right amount of comedic relief. Inspired by the classic Hasbro board game and adapted from Jonathan Lynn’s cult-favorite film, Clue brings all the intrigue, fast-paced wit and suspicious side-eyes you could hope for.
The set design does a lot of heavy lifting, creating an interactive and vibrant setting that invites the audience straight into the mystery. Every door closed, or secret passage opened, makes you feel like you are one wrong turn away from accusing yourself. Fans of the game will appreciate the attention to detail in the mansion’s layout, familiar rooms and the spot-on characters’ looks and personalities, as if all were pulled directly from the board. There is clear intention behind every costume choice, and the set design feels true to the game’s charm without being overly eccentric.
The cast matches that energy beat for beat. The characters bring a high-energy liveliness to the stage that never lets the momentum drop. There is hardly a pause — unless it is deliberately milked for dramatic and comedic effect. The dialogue moves quickly, the humor lands sharply, and the chemistry between the actors elevates the stage presence to another level. And for a game famous for its countless outcomes, the show manages to steer the story toward an ending
that feels both satisfying and thoughtfully considered.
If you think you have what it takes to solve the murder mystery, Clue runs through January 18 at the Providence Performing Arts Center. For tickets and information, visit ppacri.org. Remember, every detail matters, and everyone is a suspect.
