When winter has settled into Rhode Island, a few days of Florida sunshine can sound especially appealing. This year, travelers will have three additional hyper-seasonal flights to make that escape a reality during peak school vacation weeks from PVD without the hassle of the traffic to BOS.

Allegiant Air is adding limited, hyper-seasonal service from Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport to Orlando-Sanford, Fort Lauderdale, and Sarasota. 

For Rhode Island travelers, the appeal starts before the plane takes off. Flying from PVD means beginning a Florida getaway closer to home and avoiding the drive north to Boston just to head south. And once travelers arrive, the three destinations offer distinctly different experiences, from Fort Lauderdale’s beaches and canals to Sarasota’s arts and Gulf Coast setting and Sanford’s waterfront downtown.

The new routes are designed around select winter and spring travel periods rather than operating throughout the season. That gives travelers new choices for finding some Florida sunshine, but it also makes planning ahead important.

Here’s when Allegiant’s new flights will operate:

• Orlando-Sanford: Once weekly during the weeks of Feb. 10 and Feb. 17, with service returning during the weeks of April 14 and April 21.
• Fort Lauderdale: Once weekly during the weeks of Feb. 10 and Feb. 17, with service returning during the weeks of April 14 and April 21.
• Sarasota: Once weekly during the weeks of Feb. 10 and Feb. 17, with service returning during the weeks of April 14 and April 21.

Discover PVD’s new Orlando-Sanford destination

Orlando-Sanford stands out among the three additions for an important reason: It’s not simply a new Allegiant route. Orlando-Sanford is a brand-new destination from PVD altogether.

Sanford sits about 30 minutes north of Orlando, giving visitors access to Central Florida while offering an experience of its own. The historic waterfront city sits along Lake Monroe and the St. Johns River, where boating, fishing and river cruises are among the ways to spend time on the water.

Historic Downtown Sanford offers shops and restaurants just blocks from the marina. Visitors can also explore the 4.5-mile Sanford RiverWalk by bike or on foot, while families can consider the nearby Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens.

For travelers who want to pair a Central Florida vacation with a destination beyond Orlando itself, the new route provides another option directly from PVD.

Find beaches and canals in Fort Lauderdale

For travelers dreaming about trading a Rhode Island winter for warm days near the water, Fort Lauderdale offers the classic South Florida combination of beaches and sunshine, along with plenty to explore away from the sand.

Known as the “Venice of America,” Fort Lauderdale has a network of canals that visitors can explore by water taxi. On land, Las Olas Boulevard is a destination for shopping and dining, while the city’s Riverwalk connects visitors with its historic riverfront and Arts and Entertainment District.

Travelers who simply want to soak up the Florida weather can head for Fort Lauderdale’s beachfront promenade. Those ready for an adventure farther afield can venture west for an airboat trip into the Everglades.

With Allegiant’s service from PVD available only during select weeks, travelers considering Fort Lauderdale will want to plan around the limited schedule.

Sarasota rounds out Allegiant’s three hyper-seasonal additions with a mix that can make choosing between a cultural getaway and time outdoors unnecessary.

Located on Florida’s Southwest Coast, Sarasota is known for its arts scene and proximity to Gulf islands and white-sand beaches. The John & Mabel Ringling Museum of Art is one of its signature attractions, where visitors can explore art collections, gardens, a circus museum and Ca’ d’Zan, the Ringlings’ 36,000-square-foot seaside mansion.

Downtown offers shops, galleries, restaurants and nightlife, while travelers looking to spend more of their vacation outdoors can visit Marie Selby Botanical Gardens or head to nearby Gulf beaches.

For Rhode Islanders looking for sunshine with plenty to do beyond the beach, Sarasota offers another distinct way to spend a winter or spring break.
