Meetings and conventions mean big business for Rhode Island. They generate millions of dollars for our local economy and employ tens of thousands of Rhode Islanders. In the last year alone, GoProvidence (the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau) and its subsidiary, the Rhode Island Sports Commission, booked 240 events for future years that are expected to result in nearly $99 million in direct spending across the state.

GoProvidence’s dedicated team works tirelessly to secure these events. You can lend a hand by recommending Rhode Island to a group or organization that you belong to. Maybe it’s a professional association, an alumni group, a gardening club … you name it. Each year these groups gather and meet in destinations across the U.S. So why not meet here?

Meeting attendees love Providence for its mix of quaint and quirky — a classic New England destination with big city vibes. The city is nationally known for stellar restaurants and innovative chefs. Creativity is valued here, with murals and sculptures around every corner. Downtown is walkable and home to a wide variety of hotels to suit every taste. Meeting planners appreciate that their attendees can step outside the Rhode Island Convention Center and walk to dinner or a touring Broadway show within minutes.

The entire state is easily accessible, whether attendees are looking to spend the day strolling through Newport or are heading to a hockey tournament competing on rinks from URI to Bryant. Plus, we’re easy to get to for a sizable portion of the country, with 15% of the U.S. population living within 300 miles of Rhode Island.

Who better to advocate for meeting in Rhode Island than the people that live here? We know we live in a great state with cool things to do (gondolas, WaterFire, festivals, boutique shopping, Broadway shows!). All things we look for when traveling beyond our borders.

GoProvidence makes it easy for you. Once you “Recommend RI” for your group, their expert staff takes it from there. They collaborate directly with the planners and offer detailed attention to incoming groups through their convention services team. All of which is complimentary.

Each year GoProvidence honors dozens of local leaders who have helped bring meetings, conventions, and sporting events to the state of Rhode Island at its Ambassador Award Luncheon. This year’s ambassadors collectively helped book 23 groups estimated to fill nearly 8,800 hotel rooms and generate close to $7 million for the Rhode Island economy.

“We promote Providence, Warwick, and all of Rhode Island as a unique blend of city sophistication and small-town charm and accessibility. And to me, that close knit community is one of our greatest strengths,” said Kristen Adamo, president & CEO of GoProvidence. “As Rhode Islanders, we are advocates for our state and Recommend RI has proven that advocacy translates to real economic activity.

GoProvidence is so grateful to the ambassadors who make that possible, helping us grow the economy while further promoting Providence, Warwick and Rhode Island as premier meetings and leisure destinations.”
