Trendsetter: Get to Know Local Interior Designer Alison Hammatt
The Providence-based interior designer dishes on her new studio, her favorite stores and the best local eats.
How did you get into interior design?
I’ve always loved interior design. I have happy memories shadowing my mother as she decorated our family home. I was an English teacher for almost ten years before two friends asked if I’d be interested in helping them decorate their first homes. At home with my second child and not yet back in the classroom during the COVID years, I said yes — and the rest is history. With only two clients, I started an Instagram (@alisonhammatthome), made a website and hit the ground running.
How did your Fox Point studio come about?
I started my business from my kids’ playroom and when it started to grow — hiring a full-time employee, working on more projects — I knew I needed a dedicated studio space. I live nearby and always loved this beautiful building. I know many others do, too, so I am mindful and see it as my responsibility to keep it beautiful and pleasing for the community to enjoy.
What do you love about working in historic New England homes?
I am so inspired by the diverse range of creativity and making here in our state: chefs, artists, musicians, etc. From an interior design perspective, the preservation in Rhode Island — and Providence, specifically — makes it stand out nationally. It’s such a thrill to work in these historic homes and preserve them to be enjoyed for years to come.
Where do you love to shop?
Stewart House, Fox Point Grocers, Providence Picture Frame and Stock Culinary Goods are some favorites. You can also find me shopping at Newport Lamp & Shade Company and Cottage & Garden in Newport, and at Groundswell and Richard Kazarian’s antique store in Tiverton.
How would you define your personal style?
My personal style is classic and approachable. I love jeans, button-downs and loafers. I usually throw in some snazzier accessories like unexpected jewelry (shoutout to new Rhody jewelry brand Mister B), scarves and accessories. This sort of relates to how I design homes, too — traditional foundations with exciting accents.
Favorite local eats?
I am all about Club Frills right now. It is such a vibey, throwback place with great cocktails and snacks. My other go-to spots are Persimmon, Oberlin, New Rivers and Dolores. My husband eats at Debbie’s for lunch maybe twice a week — he raves about it.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to get into interior design?
Stay true to your taste and point of view. It can be tempting to question your own style and ideas (it’s healthy to frequently investigate and refine), but I think it’s important to stay curious and excited about your own design eye. alisonhammatthome.com
