Patriots Legend Ty Law Breaks Down the Keys to Victory for the Pats in Super Bowl LX
The three-time Super Bowl champion also shares his thoughts on Belichick's recent Hall of Fame snub, his final score predictions for the Big Game, and his special discount code for SportsBook.
Three-time Super Bowl champion, two-time all pro, five-time pro bowler, Pro Football Hall of Famer…. These are some of the accolades of Ty Law’s incredible NFL career. The cornerback was one of the keys to the Patriot’s first three Super Bowl wins in the early 2000’s. The Rhode Island native understands what it means to play in New England as well as anyone, so I sat down with the Patriots legend to get his thoughts on the big game this Sunday.
The Patriots have had a historic turnaround this season. After a 4-13 effort in last year’s campaign, there was little expectation for the team in 2025 — the idea of the Patriots playing for the Lombardi trophy was unthinkable just a few months ago. What exactly was the key to this turnaround? Law believes it was the hiring of [Patriots head coach] Mike Vrabel. Law attributes Vrabel’s success in New England to his reputation.
“He commands instant respect. When you look up there in the rafters, you see those three Super Bowls, and your head coach was a part of those teams,” Law says. “You can’t BS him. He knows what it takes to win a championship.”
I asked Law what the mentality of the team would be like heading into Sunday. He highlighted tuning out the noise and staying focused on the game.
“Try to keep as much normalcy as possible. Because it’s the Super Bowl, and we got a lot of young guys, there’s a lot of bright lights out there, so they can’t get too caught up in the hoopla and all the obligations with media and things like that surrounding the game. Keep those guys even-keeled and remember what we’re here for. We’re not here to celebrate right now. We’re not here to enjoy all the festivities. Yes, soak it in. Yes, you’re in the Super Bowl. But the primary job is to win the football game.”
While the core of the team is very young, the Pats have a few veterans with Super Bowl experience. I asked the three-time champion if he thought this would help the younger players on Sunday and he made sure to clarify that things are different when you play in New England
“They are champions already, and being that they are champions, they want to do it again,” he says. “They want to be a part of something special. That’s why they came to New England; there is an expectation that you have to uphold when you play here because of the success that’s already been generated. So, it’s good that they won championships, but it ain’t like winning in New England.”
The Pats entered the season as 4.5 point underdogs, and narratives of the team’s easy schedule continue to be prevalent. Law says this will all be “bulletin board material.” He knows what it’s like to be the underdog.
“We looked at that as disrespect, saying we’re the underdogs, but we actually liked it. We can be the underdog. So that gives us something else: another chip to put on our shoulder to go out there and prove you wrong.”
There are several key matchups for fans to watch out for on Sunday. Seahawks wide receiver Jaxson Smith-Njigva led the NFL in receiving yards this season, and Patriots pro-bowl corner Christian Gonzalez will likely draw that assignment for most of the game. I asked Law what his strategy would be to “try” to slow down Smith-Njigba.
“First of all, there wouldn’t be no trying, it would’ve been done!” he says.
I should have known better than to ask him that question.
Still, Law spoke highly of Gonzalez’s abilities.
“I think Christian has all the ability and confidence in the world. He can match up with anyone,” Law says. “I can’t see [Smith-Njigba] going out there and getting 150 yards on Christian Gonzalez — I can’t see that.”
I asked Law what his biggest key to the game was for the Pats and he highlighted the offensive line, which has struggled as of late.
“Holding up on the offensive line,” he sats. “You got to hold up because Seattle has a great pass rush. And the thing that we have not been strong in is protecting Drake Maye and letting guys come through. Fortunately for us Drake can use his legs, but you don’t want to have to put him in harm’s way by making him run the ball and get hit, and potentially get hurt, So the offensive line, the pressure is on those guys to protect Drake Maye.”
During every Patriots Super Bowl, there seems to be a player who may not be the biggest name, someone the casual fan may not have heard of, that ends up making a huge impact on the biggest stage. Players like Deion Branch, James White and Malcolm Butler all stepped up when it mattered most and became Patriots legends. So which under-the-radar player does Law think will make a huge impact on Sunday?
“Marcus Jones, I think that he could be an X factor on defense, because he’s a very opportunistic player, and he also has the ability to change the game around on special teams,” he continues. “I got him doing some something big: maybe a big-time punt return to put us in great field position, or a big-time interception and taking it to the house. I got some money on him doing something big.”
I also had to get his thoughts on the recent news that his former head coach, Bill Belichick, and owner, Robert Kraft, would both not be first ballot Hall of Famers. Law did not hold back.
“I think that the Hall of Fame lost some credibility with this decision. I didn’t expect to be a first ballot Hall of Famer. I thought I was worthy of getting in eventually, but when I look at my jacket, or I look at that bust, It’s like, ‘how did I get these when the greatest football coach that this game has ever seen, had an opportunity on the first try, and he didn’t get it? Or one of the greatest owners?’” Law questions. “It makes no sense whatsoever. The more you think about it, the more confused you get. I just think it’s unfortunate. It’s a black eye for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I think it’s shameful, and right now it is a Pro Football Hall of Shame, because it’s a shame that Bill Belichick isn’t going in this year, nor is Mr. Kraft, and it’s wrong.”
Meanwhile, betting has completely taken over sports, from fantasy football, to creating parlays. There are lots of ways to make the game even more exciting. I asked Law for some of his picks for the game: His bets included Hunter Henry anytime touchdown, and Kayshon Boutte over receiving yards total, as well as the Patriots on the Moneyline. If you also want to get in on the action for the Big Game, use his code, Ty50, while signing up for the SportsBook Rhode Island app and get $50 in Bonus Bet money when you wager just $5.
Finally, it was time to ask Law for his final score prediction for Super Bowl LX. There was never a doubt who he was going to pick.
“27-21 Patriots.”
