Located on South Water Street and overlooking the beautiful Providence River, Plant City is the self-proclaimed world’s first plant-based vegan food hall.

Led by award winning businesswoman Kim Anderson and executive chef Luis Jaramillo, Plant City has found massive success despite the stigma around plant-based food. Their menu is diverse with burgers, chicken sandwiches, pizza, pasta and even tacos. Of course, all of these dishes are made from plants, nuts, tofu and more. It’s a complex menu that you won’t find anywhere else.

Six years after opening its doors to the Ocean State and quickly endearing itself as a favorite date night spot, the restaurant has undergone a serious makeover and reinvigorated its menu thanks in part to its patrons.

“Thanks to incredible constructive feedback from our guests, we have added two new kitchens, creating a full menu of all concepts on the first floor, and singular upstairs space with a focus on global creativity,” says Anderson.

That new upstairs space, SĒZN, offers guests an intimate experience with an open kitchen which adds to the warm environment. The booths are lined with olive green velvet cushions and the stylish interior couples well with the bar that itself is covered in greenery.

“SĒZN is more than a restaurant — it’s an experience. The moment you walk in, you’re welcomed by a beautifully designed space and a team whose smiles tell you that you’re in the right place,” says Jaramillo.

Even through these massive changes, regulars can rest assured that their long-time favorites haven’t gone anywhere.

“The best part about our relaunch is that all of our most popular items are here to stay! Favorites like our signature burgers, pizza, and baked goods are back by popular demand. The new menu items are more complex, but the simple flavors and comforts our customers love are still the main focus of each dish,” says Jaramillo.

While it’s nice to hear that favorites aren’t going anywhere, it’s just as exciting to know what Jaramillo and his kitchen staff are ready to serve up on the new menu.

“The arancini, without a doubt, it’s one of those dishes we carried over from our 345 by Plant City speakeasy concept because it consistently wowed everyone who tried it: creamy on the inside, packed with flavor and with the perfect crunch — it hits every note. The forbidden [kimchi] black rice is another standout. It’s bold, unique and something you won’t easily find elsewhere — it’s already become a staple,” says Jaramillo.

The leadership at Plant City has made it clear that they are committed to the community that has supported them since their opening in 2019.

“I want our customers to feel like we’re paying attention to their needs and I really think we’ve done that here with both food and atmosphere,” says Anderson.

Diners’ have come to expect unique and delicious experiences at Plant City; its location on the Providence River has always given it that inherent romantic or elegant feeling that isn’t always easy to find. Anderson and Jaramillo understand that this has worked for them, and while they’ve committed to upgrading, they understand the necessary balance needed.

“We’ve been very intentional in creating a comfortable, sophisticated yet familiar place for our guests by maintaining their favorite dishes over the past six years all while testing out new creative dishes,” says Anderson.

While the renovations have turned out to be a massive success, it wasn’t the easiest process for Anderson and Jaramillo. Roadblocks weren’t uncommon, and the process took longer than originally expected. However, the team came out stronger on the other side and landed on their feet with a successful soft opening just a few weeks ago.

“This has been a long time coming for all of us, and we’re so excited to see our vision finally come to life. I am so proud of what we’ve built together as a team. From our long-term subcontractors to our Plant City team, everybody has pulled together to imagine and build this space for over eight months. We’re elated to finally share this with our most loyal customers as well as those who may have been considering giving us a try,” says Anderson.

While there aren’t any immediate changes in the near future, Plant City continues to think ahead as they have always done.

“We aspire to be a destination where everyone discovers something they adore, whether they adhere to a plant-based diet, are curious about plant-based options, or simply seek a fresh culinary experience in Providence. Our aim is to cultivate an environment where a plant-based menu is approachable and enjoyed by all,” says Anderson.
