Once Halloween is over, many of us wish for more opportunities to dress up for a theme party. Before the holidays set in, Sojourner House is hosting its thirteenth annual Masquerade Ball on Fri., November 17 from 7-11 p.m. at the Graduate Providence, and tickets are now on sale. This year’s theme is Celestial Visions, “inspired by astrology, the moon, the constellations, and the visions we all have for a brighter future.” Guests can anticipate an evening of live music, dancing, stardust and fortune telling, plus a dessert contest for which the theme Celestial Visions will be put to the test by local bakeries. Guest can dress in star-crossed costumes, glitzy and glittery attire, or represent one of the constellations or astrological signs. Hello, I’m a Leo; I might have to go as a lioness! Bonus points go to whomever shows up dressed as the man in the moon.

The Masquerade Ball will include an astrology-inspired cocktail hour, a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and special performances from Toys 2 Men, Extraordinary Rendition Band (ERB) and more. During the ball, guests can take a look at celestial-themed desserts made by various local bakeries. The participants in this year’scompetition are Carina e Dolce, Awesome Sweets, Ninth Cake, Wright’s Dairy Farm & Bakery, Flower Bakery and JWU Pastry Arts Club. Judges for the dessert contest are Mario Hilario from NBC 10, chef Frank Terranova from “Cooking with Class,” Laura Afonso from Buns and Bites, Jariah Gray from Two Hungey B*tches, and myself, Jamie Coelho, editor-in-chief of Rhode Island Monthly. After the contest, guests will get to sample the entries.

Tickets are $125 per person or $150 for a “Champagne Supernova” Ticket, which includes a glass of prosecco. There will be a cash bar at the event.

The Masquerade Ball is Sojourner House’s largest yearly fundraising event and helps to raise critical unrestricted funds to support the groups anti-violence mission. Sojourner House also has until Oct. 31 to raise $250,000 for its Capital Campaign. If they can raise this amount by Halloween’s end, then the Champlin Foundation will double it.

Initially founded by a group of Providence residents and Brown University students, staff and faculty members, Sojourner House has been serving victims and survivors of abuse through a variety of services and education initiatives since 1976. Thanks to the efforts of their many supporters, Sojourner House has grown from a part-time, volunteer hotline into a provider of comprehensive services available to victims of abuse twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. In the agency’s forty-seven year history, they’ve provided support to over 60,000 individuals.

The organization’s goal is to promote healthy relationships by providing culturally sensitive support, advocacy, housing and education for victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking; and to effect systems change. They offer support groups, emergency shelter, transitional and permanent supportive housing, sexual health advocacy, emotional counseling, immigration support, professional and community trainings and more.
