House Lust: The Barnacle, an Iconic Summer Cottage in the Dumplings, is on the Market
The house was carved into the craggy Jamestown coast in 1888.
Island Realty’s Petra Laurie calls the Barnacle a “once-in-a-lifetime house,” and she has the authority to say so. The property has been in the Laurie family since the 1920s.
She can still recollect the feeling of awe that washed over her the first time she saw it. “It’s just amazing,” she says. “I’d never seen a house built into a rock…and it has the most incredible views.”
The property, which Laurie’s three adult children inherited from their late father, David Laurie, features a main summer house and a heated two-bedroom post and beam cottage (a.k.a. Barnacle Lee). Laurie says the property was a little too much for her children, who don’t live locally, to keep up.
“It just needs to have a new steward,” she says. “We tried to preserve it to the best of our abilities.”
Not much has changed since the place was built by noted local architect, Charles Bevins. The family renovated the kitchen but the rest is as it was in the 1880s, right down to the windows and the views they frame. The property spans two acres and it’s the only plot of land in the Dumplings — named after the large rocks dotting its cove — that boasts its own private beach.
“It really is an iconic house,” Laurie says.
