Twenty-five years ago, in a small science museum in Newport, Rhode Island, a simple question sparked a bold idea: How could the wonder of a museum extend beyond its walls and into the community? That curiosity became the foundation for what Thames & Kosmos is today.

At the heart of this vision was Jane Holdsworth, Thames Science Center’s director. A passionate advocate for hands-on, informal science education, Holdsworth believed deeply that learning should be engaging and accessible to everyone. During the 1980s and ’90s, the center became known for its commitment to experiential learning under her leadership. Seeking a partner who shared her philosophy, she found inspiration in Kosmos, a German science publisher with a history dating back to 1822. For nearly two centuries, Kosmos had been educating the public on science and nature.

In 2001, the partnership between the Thames Science Center and Kosmos led to the founding of Thames & Kosmos in North America. The Fuel Cell Car was the company’s innovative first launch, and marked a new standard in STEM learning. The kit introduced young learners to hydrogen fuel cell technology through hands-on experimentation, making complex scientific concepts tangible.

Following Jane Holdsworth’s passing in 2003, leadership transitioned to her son, Ted McGuire, who carried forward her mission with passion and vision. Under his guidance, the company continued to expand its portfolio of award-winning STEM kits, building a reputation for quality, innovation, and educational depth. Thames & Kosmos grew steadily for a decade, as the company broadened its STEM product lines, strengthened its U.S. distribution network, and expanded its operations in Rhode Island. In 2013, Kosmos became the majority owner, deepening the global partnership and providing additional resources to grow to the next level. In 2015, the company also entered the world of board games. Its EXIT: The Game series achieved international acclaim, winning the prestigious 2017 Kennerspiel des Jahres, one of the highest honors in the gaming industry.
