Can’t-Miss Events in Rhode Island
This month: Tour URI Master Gardeners' private paradises, scope out vintage motorcars and go lobstering with the experts.
6/7–6/8 British Motorcar Festival
Why: This annual celebration begins with a parade of vintage British motor cars followed by a street party in downtown Bristol with music, yummy bites and delicious drinks. Stroll among the shiny automobiles or watch British motorcars race in the racing paddock. No motorcar show is complete without the arrival of the “Queen,” who will be marked with a royal cannon salute. Ladies, wear your best and brightest lid to participate in the hat competition, too.
Where: Colt State Park, Route 114, Bristol.

6/29–6/30 URI Gardening with the Masters Tour
Why: Twenty-six private gardens designed and maintained by University of Rhode Island Master Gardener volunteers will be open to the public. Gardens on the tour are located in towns including Charlestown, East Providence, Narragansett and more. Each garden is unique, in name and in design. Many support pollinators and attract beneficial insects. Others are designed for homestead-scale vegetable and fruit production. Guests have the opportunity to see each garden with guidebooks.
Where: Various gardens in Rhode Island.

Through August: Lobstering Tour
Why: Sit back and watch how lobster traps are hauled up from the sea floor, then get to work and help the crew sort the catch, throw the small lobsters back into the sea and re-bait the traps. Both kiddos and adults will learn what it is like to be a working lobsterman on beautiful Narragansett Bay. This ninety-minute marine adventure stays in protected waters and the classic, Maine-built vessel is comfortable for passengers. Wear soft-soled shoes or rubber boots.
Where: 31 Bowens Wharf, Newport.
