October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center (EBCC) organized an event on Saturday, October 12, where hundreds of survivors, loved ones and advocates walked in support of ending domestic abuse. The walk was led by Estefania Dempsey and her family as a tribute to her son, four-year-old Liam, whose life was taken in March of this year. Thirty-three teams were registered to fundraise money towards programs and services which assist survivors with safety and recovery. Other organizations in attendance included About Time Life Coaching, SOAR from the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Paces, Northeast Family Services and BHLink. Community resources can be found through these associations such as support groups, counseling services, financial assistance and shelter programs.

The fundraising goal of $5,000 was not just met but surpassed, with the event raising a total of $7,500 for the cause. The walk took place around Rocky Point Park in Warwick followed by live music along with food trucks and face painting. Survivors also shared their stories to let their voices be heard. One featured musician and survivor, Empress, spoke to the crowd about her journey with music and how it helps empower herself along with others. The Warwick Police additionally provided the walkers with a K9 demonstration. Purple t-shirts with the words of the mission, “Breaking the Silence, One Step at a Time, were worn by many.
