While widespread appreciation for sea shanties may have been recently revived by TikTok, it’s worth note that the Ocean State never truly lost its affinity for maritime music. The proof is in Sharks Come Cruisin: the energetic Providence-based band is releasing their third full-length record, “I Wish I Was On Gansett Bay,” on Friday, October 20..

(And psst, if you’re not already familiar with their toe-tappin’ music, get a taste of it ahead of their new release below.)

Featuring twelve dynamic tracks, Sharks Come Cruisin’s latest album is a continuation of their musical progression from previous “louder” works to a “dramatically different approach” with more of an “unplugged, layered sound.” Listeners can look forward to some of the first shanties that lead vocalist and guitarist Mark Lambert collected while researching the genre in the early 2000s, as well as rare composition called “Charts” which features a haunting banjo meets cello entanglement. Cited as the inspiration for the record’s title, “Sugar in the Hold” welcomes listeners with the catchy and relatable opening line, “I wish I was on Gansett Bay, raising pints in a neighborly way” against a medley of tunes from the accordion, banjo, fiddle and melodica (think a handheld keyboard meets a pump organ). The track then showcases the musical abilities of all six Sharks Come Cruisin’ members with a return to their recognizable gang-vocal chorus over the bass and drums.

The record will be available for digital download at sharkscomecruisin.com and via all streaming platforms. For those who wish to own a physical copy, limited edition green vinyls and CDs will also be available for purchase on their website.

But that’s not all. To celebrate the release of “I Wish I Was On Gansett Bay,” the sharks will be celebrating with a performance at — where else? — Narragansett Brewery in Providence on Saturday, October 21, at 7 p.m.
