A group of six chefs who are originally from El Paso, Texas, are coming together, including Jake Rojas of Tallulah’s Taqueria, for the El Paso Family Meal Beach Dinner in Jamestown to benefit El Pasoans fighting hunger. The six-course plated meal takes place on Sunday, July 16 from 2:30-7:30 p.m. at the Fort Getty Pavilion at 1050 Fort Getty Road in Jamestown.

“Fort Getty is one of the most beautiful places around with views facing Narragansett Bay,” Rojas says. “Guests can expect live fire cooking, oyster bars on the beach and locally sourced native ingredients, but prepared in a Mexican way, such as ceviche and fire-roasted fish and plenty of San Arbol chilis.”

There will be open fire cooking, wines, spirits, and live music by the Long Trees and Natale. The participating chefs include Jake Rojas; Gabe Erales of Bacalar + Tomalo in Austin, Texas; Rico Torres of Mixtli in San Antonio, Texas; Alan DelGado of Burritos Juarez in New York City; Michael Diaz de Leon of Bruto in Denver; and Danny Calleros of Clay Face Pottery in El Paso, Texas, plus local chef Mariana Gonzales-Trasvina of La Vecina in Newport will also attend.

The group organizes a dinner in a different location each year to raise funds for their organization, El Paso Family Meal. They hope to raise $15,000 to $20,000 this year for a cause that hits close to home. “We’re all from El Paso and we put together this organization called El Paso Family Meal when there was an insurgence of children being left at the border and put in these camps,” Rojas says. “We put together this organization to help fund food and shelter for them. This is year four for us.”

Horus Alvarez of Dolores will be serving cocktails. Casa Lumbre mezcal is sponsoring the event, as is Texas-based Tapo Chico. Each chef is in charge of one course; courses that are sure to give guests a taste of their hometown, all for a good cause.

“The cause is important to us because it lands close to home,” Rojas says. “Even though I am not in El Paso anymore, it’s still home. Everyone who is coming lives in other parts of the country, but always comes back home.”

Tickets are $250 each and available at elpasofamilymeal.com.
